My first efforts with herringbone purfling...
It went better than I expected. EIR back and sides, and a Carpathian top. Finish will be a shellac wash coat, Rockhard Varnish, and FP finish coat.

Wayne: Yes, I do build mandos - just starting my first F5 style from scratch. The one in the photo is a friend's 29' Gibson A model, that was trashed during a previous "repair" effort. The fretboard needed replacement, and there was a hole (off-center) as big as a nickel (no exageration!) in the tailblock from a botched installation of some sort of electronics. I reamed the hole and plugged it with a mahogany dowel, patched the maple, and am replacing the fretboard. Almost done with this, then I can get my mando back from him! -Mark |

Way to go, Mark!
I did herringbone on my OM last week myself. It really adds some classy detail to it, doesn`t it? Did you make your own herringbone? I did and I`m not sure if it was worth the time and trouble vs buying it from one of our vendors.

Didn't make the herringbone - I got it from LMI. I would like to eventually learn to make my own "fancy" purflings, but that's not in the cards for a while yet! I do love the classic look the herringbone gives, but being a bluegrass player, I'm a sucker for those old Martin dreads! -Mark |

Hey Don: I think it's the angle - a product of my inferior photographic skills! The template came from the McRostie drawing from Stewmac, so it is the sandard shape. -Mark |

Serge: Thanks! Yes, it is PL11, although I do use the Scott Antes plan also. The label was a piece of cake. I hit various clip-art sites looking for borders, and then played with the colors and fonts until I got something I liked. Once I had the layout out the way I wanted, I grouped all the elements together and then copied and pasted them six to a page. Used acid free paper on the laser printer at work. I used MS word for all the layout. They aren't real fancy, but they look pretty good for now... -Mark |

Very nice Todd! I just love that look! And so, evidently do others - I had a gentleman I work with come over to the shop last night, and after looking at the four works in progress, and the freshly bound herringbone, commisioned a guitar! Woohoo! Commission number two! -Mark |
